There’s much more to it besides being Physically Challenged.

I have lived with Cerebral Palsy all my life, As time passes I got used to it. I used to beat myself up over it, but then I realised that no matter how much I want it to go away, it will stick with me. Forever.

So I’ve learnt to accept it.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder affecting movement and posture due to brain abnormalities or damage, often occurring before birth or in early childhood. It varies in severity and has different types:

  • Motor Impairments: CP causes difficulties in muscle control, resulting in stiffness, weakness, involuntary movements, and motor skill challenges.

  • Spasticity: Stiff and tense muscles are characteristic of Spastic CP, making movements rigid.

  • Dyskinetic: Involuntary and uncontrollable movements, like writhing or jerking motions, are common.

  • Ataxic: Ataxic CP affects balance and coordination, leading to issues with precise movements and stability.

  • Mixed Types: Some individuals may exhibit a combination of CP types or varied symptoms.

  • Intellectual and Developmental Challenges: Cognitive abilities vary; some have normal or near-normal cognition, while others face developmental challenges.

  • Speech and Communication Difficulties: CP can impact speech and communication skills, hindering clear communication.

  • Associated Conditions: CP may co-occur with epilepsy, vision or hearing impairments, and musculoskeletal problems.
